    • Biography

Mary Ross was born 1769 in Hardy County, West Virginia, now Grant County and died on 13 Sep 1852. She married her uncle [Crose-21|Michael Cross] about 1786. Mary and her husband Michael moved from Virginia to Kentucky before 1800. Mary can be found in the 1820[1] and 1850[2] census living with her daughter Sarah Utterback and her husband Covington.

Michael and Mary (Ross) Crose were courageous in 1788 and ventured to Nicholas County and Bourbon County, Kentucky and set up a home for their fourteen children. Both are buried on their farm located on Hinkston Creek at the mouth of Long Branch, East Union, Kentucky. This cemetery is now overgrown with weeds and grasses and the tombstones cannot be seen without digging for them.

In 1813 a letter was written from John Ross and wife Susannah to Michael and Mary (Ross) Cross. The letter was signed "Your brother John and Susan Ross". The letter also mentions that "brother Philip is dead" and that his wife may go live with brother "Stephen Ross".[1] This information included in this news letter establishes the paternity of Mary Ross.

      Catherine m. Thomas Wilson
      Elizabeth m. Benjamin Utterback
      Jonathan m. Susan Utterback
