Item, I bequeath to my daughter Tabitha Edwards the stock of cattle which she has of mine in her possession to her and her heirs & assigns for ever also one Ginnea (?). Item, I give and bequeath to my Grand daughter Penelope Edwards one Feather Bead now in the possession of Uriah Edwards o her & her Heirs for Ever. Item, I give and bequeath to my son James Speight one bay mare one cart and work glass one bead and Furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item, I bequeath to my grand daughter Rebecah Speight one Gray year old Colt to her and heirs forever after. I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Polly Rose my riding Saddle to her & her heirs forever Item, I bequeath to my Grand Children that is the surviving children of my son wiliam Speight all the rest of my property of every kind after paying my just debts to be sold and equally divided among them and their heirs and assigns for ever. I do hereby appoint my truste friend Matthew McCullers and my son James Speight Executors to this my last will and Testament Revoking all other wills by me here to fore made in Testamony whereof I the said penelope speight have hereunto set my hand and seal the 2nd day of December one thousand Eight hundred and twenty one.     Notes:

    William Speight was born est 1778, in NC. His first born was Albert, born in Wake County in 1800. William then moved to Dickson County TN where the remaing three of his sons were born. (Jesse, William, Arthur). Two fellow researchers have said his wife's name is Mary Berton (or Benton), or Sally Bish. I have found a William & Sally Bish, but cannot prove them this is the only marriage or relative of mine. I have found little info on Mary Berton (or Benton).

    WILLIAM SPEIGHT settled in Dickson County from Wake County NC around 1800 or a little after. An old biography written by Tom Speight's great uncle said William settled on the "Westside of the Harpeth River around 1800". He had a son, Albert S. born around 1800. His other sons: Jesse M. b. 1805 Dickson, John T. (Alsey) b.abt 1807 Dickson, William D. b. 2-15-1811

    This location would have to be just down the road from the Mitchell, Joslin, and Rooker families. Jesse is listed next door to his brother Albert and just down the road from Alsey. Also listed on the same page is Shaderick Bell and James Robertson. Robert Duke and Burwell Jackson are shown living in the same neighborhood. Sources say that Jesse and Sarah had some eight children.

    In the 1840 Dickson County Census Jesse M. Speight is listed as head of a household consisting of 1 male 30 to 40, 2 females under 5, 2 females 5 to 10, and 1 female 15 to 20. His first wife, unk Harris died in 1840.
    In the Dickson County Census of 1850, Jesse M. Speight, 45, farmer, and his second wife Sarah, 40, are listed as having nine children, viz.: Julia - 19, Evaline - 18, Almyra - 15, Guilford - 14, Matilda - 12, Jesse - 8, Edithy - 6, Nancy - 4, and Elizabeth - 2.

    In the 1850 Slave Schedule, Jesse M. Speight is listed right under Moses Parker, with Jesse owing 6 Slaves, 4 adults, 2 children.

    Jesse M. Speight's obituary was printed in the Nashville and Louisville Christian Advocate, Thursday, July 22, 1853, and reads as follows:
    Died, at his residence in Dickson county, Tenn, May 19, 1852, Mr. Jesse M. Speight, in the 47th year of his age.
    Brother Speight was for fifteen years an acceptable member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which he has left to join the church triumphant on high.
    Methodist preachers, as well as those of his own communion, received at his house a hearty welcome and were kindly and hospitably entertained and cared for.
    His last illness was short, though severe; but he bore it with Christian fortitude and resignation, and met the last enemy with the courage of the true soldier, saying to weeping friends in his last hours, that he was not afraid to die, and that he was ready for the change of worlds.
    He has left behind a bereaved widow, (sister of Rev. L. C. Bryan of Tennessee Conference,) and nine children. May God administer comfort in this dark hour, and enable them, by his grace, so to pass the waves of this weeping world, as ultimately to meet their loved and lost in the climes of light and love.
