Notes:
English colonial settlement of North Carolina came to the Carolinas, starting in the coastal areas, where settlers migrated south from Virginia. Explorers and fur traders were the first to reach the Piedmont, paving the way for eventual settlers. Rowan County was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. It was named for Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754. It was intended to incorporate all of the lands of the Granville District that had previously been included in Anson County.
A house several miles west of present-day Salisbury in "the Irish settlement" served as the first courthouse starting June 15, 1753. Daniel Boone's father Squire Boone served as one of the first magistrates. By mid-1754 a new courthouse site was selected near "the place where the Old Waggon Road (crosses) over Grant's Creek."
We don't know why or how Robert Oliphant died so young two years (1785) after his young wife died (1783 - probably in childbirth).
A firm connection to the Robert Oliphant fromm the Carolinas who served in the light dragoons under Samuel Martin, Lt COl. Polk, and General Sumter during 1781 cannot be established at this time.
Robert married Rebecca CLAYTON on 7 Feb 1770 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Rebecca (daughter of George CLAYTON and Sara Ann DODSON) was born in 1747 in Rowan County, North Carolina; died in 1783 in North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:
James Oliphant/Oliphint was born in about 1774 in North Carolina. He was married in Davidson Co Tennessee to Polly Compton on 1 Sep 1797. In 1804, he purchased 157 acres from Samuel Oliphant for $314 which was a part of Samuel's 1801 purchase listed above. James appears in the 1810, 1820, and 1840 censuses of Rutherford County, and his will was written and proved in Rutherford County in 1849.
Incorrect assumptions and connections primarily made in the 1980's by other researchers confuse this James Oliphant with another who married Jane Rankin. It is clear through Census records and other facts, that there were TWO lines, distinct and seperate.
James Oliphant of Rutherford County and Mary Polly Compton had ten children, viz.: Samuel, Amelia, Harriet, Presley Ward who married Mary Leanne Fitzhugh and from whom I descend, Isaac, Andrew, William, James, Franklin, and Martha. The following will and add-ons apply:
Will of James Oliphant

Notes:
Dr. Oliphant and Lavina locked the children in the cupboard/closet under the stairs when the "Yankees" came and invaded their house during the Civil War. Apparently he appeased the Yankees by giving them whatever it was they wanted and kept the children safe. Also there is a story about how we all missed out on being Coca Cola heirs because he (or did he also have a brother in Georgia?) refused to invest in the syrup his pharmacist friend developed. The story gets a little muddy on whether he didn't think it would sell because he didn't like the taste or whether he withdrew from the venture when he found out the formula contained "dope". (from Jan Duncan) GOODSPEED'S BIOGRAPHIES OF Roane County Tennessee 1886 page 3 of 3 James OLIPHANT, M.D., a retired physician, of the Ninth District, McMinn County, Tennessee was born in Greene County, Tenn., April 30, 1816, and is the son of James and Jane (RANKIN) OLIPHANT. The ancestors of the OLIPHANTS came from Scotland. The father was born in Faquier County, Va., April 28, 1776, and died in Greene County, Tenn., November 1, 1846. He was the son of John OLIPHANT, who was born in New Jersey, and died in Greene County, Tenn., about 1823, and was at the time of his death seventy-four years of age. He was a gunsmith by trade, but afterward purchased a farm, and turned his attention to farming. The mother's father was a native of Scotland, and fled from that country on account of the religious persecutuion. The mother of our subject was born in Greene County, Tenn., in 1782, and died in Greene County, in 1844. Our subject is the seventh of twelve children. He secured a liberal education at Greeneville and Tuscalum Colleges, and studied medicine with Drs. BROYLES, RANKIN and MOORE. In 1839 he went to Philadelphia, Loudon Co., Tenn., and began the practice of medicine. After two years he went to Roane County, Tenn.; then after three years went to Hamilton County and remained one year, then moved back to Roane County, and remained until 1863, and then was int he S.P. Moore hospital, at Griffin, Ga.; after several months he went to Albany, Ga., and was in other hospitals as a surgeon and nurse. After the war he remained to Ringgold, Ga., for two years, then came to Riceville, McMinn County. After one year he purchased and moved to the farm where he now lives. When he began for himself he had just $5. At the beginning of the war he was worth valuable property, but lost over $15,000. He is a Democrat. August 29, 1840, he married Lavina BALLARD, who was born in Roane County, Tenn., February 7, 1822. She is the daughter of William and Mary BALLARD. She had a good education, and is a member of the Baptist Church. This union resulted in eight children, four of them now living: Mary J., John J., Samuel B., and Charles W.
