BARONY OF HASTINGS (VIII, 9) 1396

SIR EDWARD HASTINGES, knight, of Elsing, Fenwick, &c., de jure LORD HASTINGS, next brother and heir, born at Fenwick, and bap. at Campsale, 21 May 1382. He was knighted before 6 November 1399, on which date the King granted him ?40 a year, during his minority, that he might maintain his estate. On 11 July 1403 he was committed to the Tower. On 10 February 1403/4 he released to the King all his right in Sutton Scotney. In 1405 he was about to go to sea on the King's service with Thomas of Lancaster, Admiral of England. The right to bear the undifferenced Arms of Hastinges was decided against him in the Court of Chivalry, 9 May 1410, and in favour of his opponent Reynold, Lord Grey of Ruthin, heir to the sister of the whole blood, in preference to his own claim as heir to the brother of the half-blood, of John, Lord Hastinges, ancestor of the Earls of Pembroke. From this decision he appealed, but finally, on refusing to pay the costs of this suit (lest he should thereby acknowledge its justice), he was imprisoned (about 1417) in the Marshalsea apparently till his death. On 11 February 1410/1, as Edward, Lord of Hastynges and Stoutvile, he was pardoned his outlawry for not appearing to answer touching a debt. Previous to the Coronation of Henry V he unsuccessfully claimed to carry the Second Sword before the King at his Coronation, and also to carry the Great Gilt Spurs, and to perform the office of Chief Napperer. On 20 November 1413 he was again committed to the Tower.

BARONY OF FERRERS OF CHARTLEY (CP doesn't give numbers/recognize the title?)

SIR EDMUND FERRERS, of Chartley, &c., usually called LORD FERRERS OF CHARTLEY, son and heir, by 2nd wife, aged 26 and more, or 27 and more, at his father's death. The King took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of his father's lands, 14 April 1413. Soon afterwards, assisted by his brothers, Thomas and Edward, he carried on a sort of private war with the Erdeswikes of Sandon, near Chartley: both parties petitioned Parliament in 2 Henry V, each claiming to be the one aggrieved. In consequence of these and many other lawless occurrences, the King accompanied Chief justice Hankeford to cos. Leicester, Stafford, and Salop, to hear plaints in person. Edmund had been presented for having, on Christmas Day 1413, given liveries of green and white cloth--3 yards apiece--to many persons not of his household: he appeared before the King in Court in June 1414, and eventually obtained a pardon, 24 January 1414/5, for all treasons, murders, and other offences committed up to 8 December, saving murders if any-committed after 19 November, 1414. He accompanied the King to France in August 1415, and was at the siege of Harfleur, August to September, at the battle of Agincourt, 25 October 1415, and at the relief of Harfleur by the Duke of Bedford, August 1416. He accompanied the King to France in August 1417, and was at the siege of Rouen, July 1418 to January 1418/9, being in the division commanded by the Earl of Huntingdon: at that of Melun, July to November 1420, and at that of Meaux, October 1421 to May 1422.

He married Ellen, 2nd daughter and coheir of Thomas Roche, of Castle Bromwich, co. Warwick, by Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas BIRMINGEHAM, and niece and heir of Sir John BIRMINGEHAM, of Birmingham, co. Warwick, Kingston Bagpuze, Berks, &c. They had livery of that portion of her inheritance which Elizabeth, Lady Clinton, formerly wife of the said Sir John Birmingeham, had held in dower or otherwise, 1 December 1423. He died 17 December 1435. His widow's dower was ordered to be assigned, 7 February 1435/6, the manor of Castle Bromwich, and the moieties of the manors of Whitacre and Birmingham, which he had held in her right as of her inheritance, having been liberated to her, 4 February 1435 /6. She had licence to marry whom she would, for a fine of ?40, 28 August 1436. She married, 2ndly, as 1st wife, before 3 May 1438, Sir Philip CHETEWYND, of Ingestre, co. Stafford, and Grendon, co. Warwick. She died 4 November 1440. He died 10 May 1444. [Complete Peerage V:317-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Edmund married Ellen De LA ROCHE, Heiress Of Bromwich in 1st Husband. Ellen was born about 1393 in Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire, England; died on 4 Nov 1440 in Nether Whitacre, Meriden, Warwickshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The author wishes to thank the Rev. Canon R. Brien Koehler for information he sent to resolve the question regarding generation 10, above (ie. marriage of Thomas Greene & Philippa de Ferrers). [Editor not fully satisfied with this conclusion]. [Magna Charta Sureties, line 34-17]

Note: Obviously with a death date of 3 Nov 1415 (which happens to be exactly the same as her mother's), this marriage did not last very long (husband Thomas wasn't born until 1400). I don't know whether MCS was questioning the marriage, the death date, or what? MCS was not fully satisfied with something. Ancestral Roots does not give any death date for Philippa; however they do say she is "buried at Norton". A large number of people on World Connect have Philippa's death in 1457/8.

John d'Arundel, 13th/6th Earl of Arundel, as which succeeded cousin 1415 and was perhaps summoned to Parliament 1416 though not thereafter (it is thought because of Mowbray hostility to his claims that family being heirs general of the previous Earls of Arundel), and de jure 3rd Lord (Baron) Mautravers, as which succeeded grandmother Jan 1404/5 (though never summoned to Parliament by that title; nevertheless he was frequently referred to as Lord Mautravers prior to 1415), KB(1399); born 1 Aug 1385; served in Agincourt Campaign 1415; married by 1407, as her 1st husband Eleanor (married 2nd Sir Richard Poynings and 3rd by 8 May 1439 1st Lord (Baron) Hungerford), daughter of Sir John Berkeley, of Beverstone, Glos, and died 21 April 1421. EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XVIII, 13 or 6) 1415

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, [who, according to the admission of 1433] may be considered Earl of Arundel, cousin and heir male, being son and heir of John d'Arundel, by Elizabeth, daughter of Edward le Despenser, which last named John [who never was summoned as a Baron] was son and heir of John D'Arundel [summoned to Parliament 1377-79], who was brother of the whole blood of Richard [xv] Earl of Arundel. Succeeded his father 14 August 1390, created K.B. 12 October 1399, became de jure Lord Mautravers by the death of his grandfather [suo jure Baroness Mautravers] on 10 January 1404/5, but was never summoned to Parliament as a Baron, though frequently styled Lord Mautravers. He was in the French wars of 1415, in which year he succeeded to the Castle and Honour of Arundel, and according to some authorities, is said to have been summoned to Parliament as Earl of Arundel, 3 September 1416, though [probably owing to the opposition of the great family Mowbray, the heirs gen. of the former Earls of Arundel] never afterwards.

He married, before 1407, Eleanor, daughter of Sir John Berkeley, of Beverstone, co. Gloucester, by his 1st wife, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir John Betteshorne, of Betteshorne in Sopley, Hants. He died 21 April 1421, and was buried at Arundel. EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XIX, 14 or 7) 1421

JOHN D'ARUNDEL, [who, in right of either his father's writ or of the admission of 1433] may be considered Earl of Arundel. Son and heir born 14 February 1407/8, at Lytchett Mautravers, Dorset. Created K.B. at Leicester, by the young King, under the name of "Dominus de Maultravers." His claim to the Earldom of Arundel not having been recognised, he was, when of age, summoned to Parliament on 12 July and 3 August 1429, by writs directed Johanni Arundel' de Arundell' Chivaler, whereby he is held to have become Lord Arundel. In December 1431 he was in the coronation of Henry VI at Paris. He greatly distinguished himself in the French wars, and was made Captain of the Castle of Rouen in February 1431/2. On 22 April 1432 he was created K.G.; and in November 1433 his petition to be considered Earl of Arundel by tenure of the Castle of Arundel, was allowed, but he was never afterwards summoned to Parliament as an Earl or a Baron. He was created, in 1434, Duke of Touraine in France, by the Regent Bedford. The Earl was severely wounded and taken prisoner at the siege of Gerberoy, in the Beauvaisis, in May 1435, was carried to Beauvais, where his leg was amputated. He died several weeks later 12 June 1435 and was buried in the Grey Friars there, though, in accordance with his will, his body was reinterred in a noble tomb at Arundel.

EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (XXI, 16 or 9) 1438

WILLIAM [FITZ ALAN otherwise MAUTRAVERS], Earl of Arundel, &c., uncle and heir [of Humphrey (XX, 15 or 8) Earl of Arundel, b. 30 Jan 1429, d. unmarried 24 Apr 1438, son of John (XIX, 14 or 7) Earl of Arunde, b. 14 Feb 1407/8, d. aft. 12 Jun 1435], born 23 November 1417, and, when of full age, obtained livery of his lands in November 1438. Summoned to Parliament (a) on 3 December 1441 as Earl of Arundel (b). Justice in Eyre of all forests south of the Trent 1459-61 and 1483-85. Took part with the Yorkists in their defeat at the second battle of St. Albans, 17 February 1461. On 1 May 1471, he was Constable of Dover Castle, and the Warden of the Cinque Ports, and again 1483 till his death. K.G. 1471. He assisted as Pincerna at the coronation of Richard III, as also as that of Henry VII, which King received knighthood at his hands shortly before that ceremony. He founded the "Arundel Mass" [by gift of the manor of Aynho, co. Northampton] to be celebrated at Magd. Coll., Oxford.

He married, after 17 August 1438 [when his marriage was granted to his future father-in-law], Joan, 1st daughter of Richard [Nevill], Earl of Salisbury, by Alice, suo jure Countess of Salisbury. She [who was a sister of Richard, Earl of Warwick] died shortly before 9 September 1462, and was buried at Arundel. He died there late in 1487, in his 71st year and was buried there. [Complete Peerage I:248-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    (a) This summons was not till eight years after the admission (1433) which confirmed the Earldom of Arundel to the Fitz Alan family. The delay is accounted for by the absence in France of Earl John, and the minority of his successor [Hymphrey]. It is probable, also, that this William may have been summoned some two or three years earlier, bu the lists of summones from 1438 to 1441 are unfortunately lost.

    (b) PRECEDENCY of the EARLS of ARUNDEL.
In 1446 Thomas Courtenay, Earl of Devon, challenged the precedence of the Earl of Arundel. The decision of the King, with consent of the Lords of Parliament, was "that William, now Earl of Arundel, have, keep, and enjoy his seat, place and pre-eminence in the High Court of Parliament, and in the King's Councils and elsewhere in the King's high presence, as Earl of Arundel, by reason of the Castle, Honour and Lordship of Arundel, as worshipfully as ever did any of his ancestors, Earls of Arundel, afore his time, above the said Earl of Devonshire and his heirs, without letting, challenge or interruption of the said Earl of Devonshire or of his heirs or of any other person." "Thus ended," adds Canon Tierney, "a controversy which, in its results, confirmed this Parliamentary decision of 1433 and established the Earldom in its original supremacy of honour above every other similar title of dignity."

William married Joan NEVILLE after 17 Aug 1438. Joan (daughter of Richard I NEVILLE, Earl Of Salisbury and Alice MONTAGUE, Countess Of Salisbury) was born about 1423 in Castle Raby, Durham, England; died before 9 Sep 1462 in Arundel Caslte, West Sussex, England; was buried in Arundel Chapel, Sussex, England. Hi,

Testamenta Vetusta (p 291) includes the Will of Joan Knowght of Taniford, Kent dated 1st June 1469. This Will was proved at Canterbury (no date given) - would this make it a PCC will, or should I look for at Kent Records Office?

She calls herself daughter and heir of Henry Knowght, so presumably she is unmarried, she also mentions her unnamed grandfather and grandmother, her two unnamed sisters and states she is next heir to her cousin Richard Malmayn.

She makes her principal beneficiary Lady Elianor Brown widow of Sir Thomas Brown and devises to Elianor her reversion of Richard Malmayn property of Pluke [near Tenterdon, Kent] and Waldersher, however she does not state if or what her connection is to Elianor Brown.

I am fairly confident that this Lady Elianor Brown is the daughter of Sir Thomas Arundel/Fitzalan of Betchworth Castle himself brother of John (1387-1421) 12th Earl Arundel. Elianor m 1434 Thomas Browne, who was later knighted, and executed July 1460 during the Wars of the Roses, however in "The Brownes of Bechworth Castle" John Pym Yateman refers to a deed of 1461 where it is stated that Elianor had remarried to Thomas Vaughn (also shown in Faris), but the name Vaughn does not appear in Joan Knowght's will (or, at least, not in the extracts given by Testamenta Vetusta)

Note: Subsequent correspondence to the above post, indicated the will was dated 1459, not 1469, which puts into doubt the death date of Thomas Browne, but I am sticking with the published source (Plantagenet Ancestry).

Eleanor married Thomas BROWNE, Of Betchworth, Sir Knight about 1431 in 1st Husband. Thomas was born about 1410 in Eythorne, Eastry, Kent, England; died on 20 Jul 1460 in Betchworth Castle, Surrey, England (Executed). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

[Burke's Peerage]

    --------------------

He [Richard Neville] married, in 1434, Anne, apparently suo jure COUNTESS OF WARWICK, sister and eventually coheir (sole heir of the whole blood) of Henry (DE BEAUCHAMP), DUKE and EARL OF WARWICK, 4th daughter of Richard, 13th EARL OF WARWICK, being only daughter by his 2nd wife, Isabel. He, who is known in history as "The Kingmaker," appears never to have been attainted and died s.p.m. as above, 14 April 1471, aged 42, being buried, with his brother, at Bisham Abbey, Berks. At his death the Earldom of Warwick [1450] remained (according to the grant in that year) in his widow for her life, while the Earldom of Salisbury reverted to the Crown and the Baronies of Montagu and Monthermer fell into abeyance between his 2 daughters and coheirs. His widow had accompanied Margaret of Anjou to England, April 1471, and, Iearning of her husband's death, took sanctuary at Beaulieu Abbey. From there she later petitioned Edward IV for her lands and dower. Shortly before 3 June 1473 she was removed, probably to Middleham, by her son-in-law Richard, Duke of Gloucester; and in May 1474, by Act of Parliament, her estates were divided between Clarence and Gloucester, "as if the said Countess were now naturally dead." Having survived both her daughters, she was granted by Henry VII, as from Michaelmas 1485, a yearly pension of 500 marks; and she obtained an Act of Parliament, November-December 1487, for the annulment of that of 1474 and her restoration to her family estates. These, however, she at once (presumably by previous arrangement), 13 December 1487, settled on the Crown, saving the manor of Erdington, co. Warwick, which she reserved for herself and her heirs. On 11 December 1490 she was appointed Principal Keeper of the Forest of Wychwood, Oxon., receiving at the same time a large grant for life of some of her former lands in many counties. She, who was born circa September 1426 at Caversham, died shortly before 20 September 1492, aged about 66, and was succeeded in the Earldom of Warwick by Edward Plantagenet, her grandson and heir.
