He was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago but it had spread to other areas in the past year. He was 84 years old when he died his family said, but math adds to 83.
Oldest son of Pauline (Strauss) Carney and Jesse Monroe Carney; attended elementary school in Denver, Colo.; St. Louis, Mo.; Long Branch, N.J.; and last in Junction City, where he was member of the Junction City High School football team, coached by Henry Shenk and Marlin Schroeder; graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1939; he attended Kansas State University; entered military service in 1942; basic training in field artillery; transferred to the U.S. Air Force; served 19 months overseas in the South Pacific; member of the 3rd Veterinary Detachment with 5th Air Force; obtained the rank of staff sergeant and was honorably discharged in November of 1944; employed by KSU for 35 years; member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Manhattan, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, elder and president of the congregation; member of the American Legion Post #17 of Manhattan.
