Notes:
Sarah's surname is presently unconfirmed. On 10 Mar., 1756, Sarah patented 397a. of land on both sides of the Virgin Spring Branch of Mechum River, Albemarle Co., VA. Patent Book #34, 1756-1762, Pg. 19.
J. Kathleen Moore ([email protected]) lists firm birth years for the children born of this marriage. These are the dates listed here, though other sources show dates at variance with these. Ms. Moore also says that all children were born prior to Davis and Sarah's arrival in America, the first three in Ireland, and the last four in England. If these dates and places are factual, and if Sarah's maiden name was Gudylouch (or some variant thereof), it suggests that Davis Stockton and the Gudylouch family came to America together. This is because Adam Gudylouch become Davis's son-in-law by marrying his daughter Hannah.

Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside, Sr.,
from Davis Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia,
by Jerry J. Stockton
Elizabeth appears to have been born about 1720, probably in England. Her father, Davis Stockton, appears to have been born about 1685 in England. Stockton is an English name and there were a large number of Stockton families living in England in the 1600s. It also appears that his children were also born in England as they all have English given names and none have distinctly Irish or Scottish given names. There is no evidence that the Davis Stockton family ever lived in Ireland.
It appears that in about 1740, at the age of about 20, she married William Whiteside in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia. It appears that Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside's son Davis Whiteside was born about 1741 near Whiteside's Creek, a branch of Mechum's River. This is where the town of Batesville in now located. They moved to what was then Tryon (now Rutherford) County, North Carolina, sometime before the Revolutionary War. William Whiteside's will is dated October 24, 1777. It is thought that Elizabeth died in Rutherford County, North Carolina, on October 31, 1791.
(c.1740) It appears that in about 1740 Elizabeth Stockton, a daughter of Davis Stockton, married William Whiteside in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virgina. Davis Stockton is known to have been living in Goochland County, Virginia, by 1737.
(1741) Virginia Land Office Patent Book No. 20, 1741-1743, pp. 162-164, March 15, 1741.
"George the second . . . in Consideration of the Sum of Forty Shillings of good and Lawful Money . . . do Give Grant and Confirm unto William Whitesides One Certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing Four hundred Acres lying and being in the County of Goochland on both sides the South fork Mechums River . . . said William Whitesides . . . the Fifteenth Day of March One thousand seven hundred and forty one In the Fifteenth Year of our Reign . . . William Gooch"
William Whiteside was probably living Goochland County before his March 15, 1741, patent. It appears that William Whiteside and Elizabeth Stockton met and married in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia.
(c.1741) The first child of Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside, Davis Whiteside, appears to have been born in about 1741 in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia.

Among those who promised support for Reverend Samuel Black were: Richard Stockton, 12 shillings; Davis Stockton, 1 pound, no shillings; Adam Gaudylock, 10 shillings; William Whiteside, 10 shillings; Thomas Whiteside, 10 shillings; Thomas Lockhart, 10 shillings; Michael Woods, 1 pound, 10 shillings; and Michael Woods Jr., 10 shillings.

From Jerry Stockton:
Robert 4 Stockton, born 1783 in Sevier County, Tennessee, father was Thomas 3 (Richard 2, Davis 1) Stockton, Sr. In 1799 Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., and his wife, Mary (nee Golden) Stockton, gave a power-of-attorney to a neighbor who also lived on the French Broad River in Sevier County, Tennessee. This power-of-attorney was written on the back of deed #10. I own the original deed #10 that has the power-of-attorney. This power-of-attorney proves that my Robert 4 Stockton's parents were Thomas and Mary Stockton, NOT Thomas and Prudence (nee Goudyloch) Stockton. There was a Thomas and Prudence (nee Goudelock) Stockton, but they lived in Rutherford County, North Carolina, where that Thomas died in 1805. I can send you a jpeg of deed #10 and the power-of-attorney that is on back if you wish.

"The Signer"
Per Jerry Stockton:
John Stockton was a signer of the Albemarle Declaration of Independence.
Note: "The first book that included information about the Davis Stockton family of Virginia was by Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton in 1911. In his book he shows the John Stockton who signed the Albemarle County, Virginia, Declaration of Independence as the son of Richard 2 (Davis 1) Stockton. This was thought to be correct until about the 1960's. At that time several researches came to the correct conclusion that all of Richard 2 Stockton's children had moved to the southern Virginia counties of Henry, Pittsylvania and Franklin before the 21 April 1779 signing of the Albemarle County document.""Only the family of Thomas 2 (Davis 1) Stockton still live in Albemarle County in the late 1770's. The book Davis Stockton of Virginia, 1972, credits John 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton as being "The Signer." This appears correct to me and I do not know of anyone who debates this point."
Albemarle Co., VA Deed Book 9, pg 57; 10 March 1785; Thomas and Fannie Stocton to John Stockton 148 acres on Stockton's Creek, fork of Mechums River and Virgin Creek for 160 pounds current money of Virginia; signed and sealed by Thomas Stockton only.
*Albemarle Co., Deed Book 9:507; "This indenture made 21 May in the year of our Lord ..(1788) Between John Stockton and Margaret his wife of Albemarle County on the one part and Jesse Stockton of the County aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said John Stockton and Margaret his wife for and in Consideration of the Sum of 80 pounds to them in hand paid by the said Jesse Stockton the Receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge have given bargained sell ... one Certain tract or parcel of land containing 148 acres lying in the fork of Mechams River on the head of Virgin Creek Bounded as followeth... that they the said John Stockton and Margaret his wife at the time of the Ensealing of these presents are and Seized of a sure Certain & Indefeasible Estate of Inheritance in fee simple in the land and premises before mentioned ... Signed John Stockton [seal], Margaret Stockton [seal] Witnesses William Wood Jr, James Hayes, Hugh Alexander, Philemon Snell."

Biography:
Samuel Whiteside was born on April 12, 1783, in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was the son of John D. Whiteside and grandson of Willian Whiteside. Samuel was the nephew of Davis, James, John D., William F., Thomas, Samuel, and Adam Whiteside who fought the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain, 1780, during the American Revolutionary War. Davis died of wounds suffered in that battle. Both William Sr. and his son, Davis Whiteside, were signers of the Tryon Resolves.
Around 1792, the Whiteside family settled near Columbia, Illinois, on the abandoned Flannery Fort site on the Kaskaskia to Cahokia Trail. William F. Whiteside was a militia captain and lived at the fort, called Whiteside Station, until his death in 1815. Thomas died at the fort in 1785 and John moved his family to Bellefountaine, now Waterloo, Illinois. Around 1800 many Whitesdie descendents moved to the Goshen Settlement, near modern Edwardsville, Illinois.
In 1811, during Tecumseh's War, Whiteside was placed in command of an Illinois company of the newly formed 17th Infantry. Captain Samuel Whiteside commanded a company of mounted infantry in the Illinois militia during the War of 1812 and served from August to November 1812. This company was drawn from St. Clair County, which comprised most of the modern State.
In August 1813 he was commissioned in the Regular Army as a captain in the Rangers. In 1814, a woman and six children were killed near modern Alton, Illinois by Native Americans. A party led by then Capt. Whiteside pursued the killers, and killed one of them who was hiding in a tree. He was discharged from the Army on July 30, 1814.
As a captain Whiteside was a signatory to the Kickapoo and Osage Treaties in 1815. In 1819, Whiteside served on the commission to select a new site for the Illinois State Capital, selecting Vandalia, Illinois. He served in the Illinois General Assembly from 1819 to 1821.
He served as a brigadier general in the Illinois militia during the Black Hawk War from April 26 to June 30, 1832. He commissioned 23-year-old Abraham Lincoln as a captain in the militia. Lincoln led a militia company for one month under command of General Whiteside.
Whiteside was married to Nancy Miller and had nine children: Thomas, Nancy, Michael, Judith, Sarah, Joel, William Modrel, Samuel Ray and Elizabeth Ann. Brigadier General Samuel Whiteside died at his daughter Elizabeth Whiteside Henderson's home in Mt. Auburn, Christian County, Illinois on January 3, 1866. He is buried at Hunter Cemetery, in Christian County.
Whiteside County, Illinois was named in honor of Samuel Whiteside.
