174 FIFTEENTH DISTRICT, THIRD SECTION, CHEROKEE Jeremiah Matthews
Martin's Newton COMMENT: Soldier of late war. Granted previous to
the first day of January, 1838
Jeremiah is mentioned in the book: "Gone to Georgia" article 604 as being
listed on the 1785 Wilkes County tax list, Elsberry District.
From the court abstracts of Cumberland County, NC, January 30, 1782, a
warrant was issued for Jeremiah and Rueben Johnson for pilfering from
confiscated property. They were to have appeared in the next April 1782
court. There is no record of that trial suggesting that Jeremiah left
North Carolina and went to Georgia before they could be tried. Georgia
had no extradition at this time. In his pension papers Jeremiah said he
left for Georgia in 1783, however since the trial was to be in 1782 it is
more likely that he left in 1782. In his pension papers he said he could
not recollect dates very well.
Ref: Slaves George(5-3-1801), Mingo(8-30-1802), Phyllis(1-5-1796) and
Sarah.(The slave Sarah is not the wife Sarah Johnson of Jeremiah- there
seems to be some confusion on this. They are two different people))
There is a very good possibility that Sarah the slave was Jeremiah's
mistress and the other three slaves their children. We discovered that
the three children were mentioned in the family bible with their birth
dates. Also in Jeremiah's will he provides for life for Sarah the slave
and that she may chose any of his children to live with for the rest of
her life. After receiveing this information it was put on the internet.
There were several replies to this information from professional
genealogists and the director of the African-American page. According to
ALL of these authorities, the information that was given is almost a 95%
chance that the slaves were Jeremiah's children, and most likely that
Sarahthe slave was the mother. Slaves were usually not mentioned in a
family bible unless they were "family". And providing for Sarah the way
he did shows that she was very important Jeremiah.
