From Scioto Company Descendants, pp. 201-202:
"Ohio military graves registration records Abner Pinney as Captain of the186th Connecticut regiment but the Connecticut Revolutionary War rosterlists him as drummer in Captain Lemuel Roberts' company of the 18thConnecticut militia regiment which served at New York in August andSeptember, 1776. The births of his eight children in Simsbury between1774 and 1787 consistently reger to him as Lieutenant Abner Pinney, strongly suggesting that he was a lieutenant of the local militia unitand that the title captain was an honorary title recognizing the factthat he had served during the war. After joining the Scioto Company,Abner Pinney sold his farm and home in West Simsbury to Oliver and LeviBradley. His sons Putnam and Levi came west with the advance work party, but Azariah remained and brought his own family and his parents west in1804. They did not arrive until after the division of lands in Augustwhere Abner was represented by his son, Abner Putnam, and received eighttown lots and 232 acres of land in Worthington, 252 acres in ClintonTownship, and 253 acres in Delaware County. Abner Pinney was the oldestmember of the Scioto Company to move west and his death soon after hisarrival was the first in the new community. The $452.51 inventory of hisestate provides a fascinating glimpse of the clothing, books, householdgoods, tools and livestock of a family migrating west. This included a"silk nankeen vest" at $3, a "Robinson Crusoe" at 12 cents, three"japanned tumblers" at 51 cents, and one "pair oxen 1 red the otherBrindle" at $55. A variety of spinning and weaving equipment suggests anoccupation to supplement farm income.

From Pinney Genealogy:
"He served in the Revolutionary War, and although not an officer of thatrank, was ever after called 'Captain.' In the Simsbury Records, p. 240,he is called 'Lieut.' He signed the Scioto Company's agreement for 860acres. His son Azariah signed for 100 acres (the name was copied intothe Records Zariah), and his son Abner Putnam signed for 100 acres withIsrael P. Case. In the distribution he received town lots Nos. 70, 54,59, 102, 127, 128, 129, 130, and farm lots No. 22 of 93 acres, No. 60 of100 acres, No. 84 of 72 acres, No. 88 of 60 acres. Of these, Nos. 22 and84 were the Pinney farm south of the town. The partition deed of Aug.11, 1804, was signed by his sons Abner P. and Levi, under power ofattorney. They also signed for their brother Azariah.
Both Abner Pinney and his son Azariah must have come to Worthington inthe fall of 1804, for on Nov. 1 the father conveys to the son two parcelsof land, one the north half of farm lot No. 22, extending from the tierline to the river, being 46 a. 2 r. 33 p., and the other being lot 84 of50 a. from the tier line to the east section line. The consideration was$200. It was acknowledged before Ezekiel Brown, J.P., and witnessed bySq. Brown and Reuben Lamb. Rec. Bk. A, p. 232.
He d. Nov. 23, 1804. His widow, Ruth, d. Mar. 28, 1806, in her 55thyear. They are buried in the churchyard at Worthington.
On a plat of the town made about 1820, No. 127, the second lot on thewest side of Pearl street south of Berlin street, appears in the name ofChester Pinney, the others having been disposed of, No. 70 belonging toKilbourn, No. 128 to P. Hunt, No. 54 to E. Griswold, No. 59 to Webb, whohad No. 60, east of it, corner of the Green, across the street fromGriswold.
He was probably the oldest member of the Scioto Company who emigratedto Ohio. The following appears upon his gravestone, besides the Masonicemblems:
Capt.
ABNER PINNEY
died Nov. 23, 1804
in the 55 year of his age
Here Abner Pinney lies, the kind, the just,
His flesh returning to its kindred dust.
True friendship dwelt within his faithful heart,
Yet from his dearest friends was cal'd to part,
And now we trust he's landed on that shore
Where death ne'er comes, and friends shall part no more.
Mrs. Pinney was Ruth Gillet, of Granby, Conn. Her gravestone isinscribed as follows:
In
memory of
MRS. RUTH
Consort of
Capt.
ABNER PINNEY
who died March 28
1806
in the 55 year of
her age.
Beneath or near this monumental stone
A mother's form is laid, her spirit gone;
True to her vows she shared a matron's fame
And kind to all; her children bless her name,
And now her earthly joys and sorrows cease
Her soul, we hope, has reached the realms of peace."
