    Notes:

    Duke of The East Franks.
Marcomer, also spelled Marcomeres, Marchomer, Marchomir, was a Frankish leader (dux) in the late 4th century who invaded the Roman Empire in the year 388, when the usurper and leader of the whole of Roman Gaul, Magnus Maximus was surrounded in Aquileia by Theodosius I.

The invasion is documented by Gregory of Tours who cited the now lost work of Sulpicius Alexander. According to this account Marcomer, Sunno and Genobaud invaded the Roman provinces Germania Inferior and Gallia Belgica in Gaul. They broke through the limes, killed many people, destroyed the most fruitful lands and made the city of Cologne panic. After this raid, the main body of the Franks moved back over the Rhine with their booty. Some of the Franks remained in the Belgian wood called "Silva Carbonaria". When the Roman generals Magnus Maximus, Nanninus and Quintinus heard the news in Trier, they attacked those remaining Frankish forces near the Silva Carbonaria and killed many of them. After this engagement, Quintinus crossed the Rhine to punish the Franks in their own country, however his army was surrounded and beaten. Some Roman soldiers drowned in the marshes, others were killed by Franks; few made it back to the Empire.

Nanninus and Quintinus were replaced by Charietto and Syrus, who were again confronted by an attack of unidentified Franks.

Later, after the 388 fall of Magnus Maximus, Marcomer and Sunno held a short meeting about the recent attacks with the Frank Arbogastes, who was a general (magister militum) in the Roman army. The Franks delivered hostages as usual, and Arbogastes returned to his winter quarters in Trier.

A couple of years later when Arbogastes had seized power and the West Roman army was dominated by Frankish officers, he crossed the Rhine with a Roman army into Germania. Marcomer was seen as leader with Chatti and Ampsivarii but the two did not engage.

Later we hear from the poet Claudian that Marcomer was captured by Romans and exiled to a villa in Tuscany. His brother Sunno crossed the Rhine and tried to become leader of the band of Marcomer, but was killed by his own people.

According to the later Liber Historiae Francorum, Marcomer was a descendant of the Trojans and a son of a king called Priam. The Liber also relates that Marcomer tried to unite the Franks after the death of Sunno. He proposed that the Franks should live under one king and proposed his own son Pharamond (whose earliest mention is in this work, and who is considered legendary by scholars) for the kingship. This source does not relate whether Marcomer succeeded, but from other later sources that recall the account of Liber Historiae Francorum, the impression may be gained that Pharamond was regarded as the first king of the Franks.

    Notes:

    King of the Franks.
Chlodio (probably died after 450), also Clodio, Clodius, Clodion, Cloio or Chlogio, was a Frankish king who attacked and then apparently ruled Roman-inhabited lands around Cambrai and Tournai, near the modern border of Belgium and France. He is known from very few records.

His influence probably reached as far south as the River Somme. He was therefore the first Frankish ruler to become established so deep within the Roman empire, and distant from the border regions where the Franks had already been established for a long time. He was possibly a descendant of the Salian Franks, who Roman sources report to have settled within Texandria in the 4th century.

Chlodio married Siegse (Argotta) (Princess ("Basina") Of The Thuringians) THURINGIANS in 412 in France. 448 - Meroveus - "One of the greatest threats posed to the early RomanChurch prior to 751 was the royal Merovingian dynasty of Gaul. They weremale-line descendants of the Fisher Kings, with an ancestry tracing backto the family of Jesus and were named after their founder Meroveus, whomthe Franks had proclaimed their Guardian at Tournai in AD 448. TheMerovingians reigned by an ancient tradition of Messianic right andinheritance passed down from generations of ancestors. In keeping withthe Grail Code, they served as guardians of their people, rather thanterritorial overlords. Hence, they were styled 'Kings of the Franks', butnever Kings of France." Basina (Basine, Basina II), was queen of Thuringia in the middle of the fifth century. She left her husband king Bisinus (Basinus I) and went to Roman Gaul. She herself took the initiative to ask for the hand of Childeric I, king of the Franks, and married him. For as she herself said, "I want to have the most powerful man in the world". This remark of her may have been related to Childeric's successful invasion of the Roman Empire and his attempt to settle a Frankish kingdom on Roman soil.

Basina's name is probably Low Franconian for 'female boss'. She is the mother of the man who is remembered as the founder of the Frankish realm and modern France. She (not her husband Childeric) named her son Chlodovech, but he is better remembered under his Latinized name Clovis I. The simple fact that Chlodovech's name comes from Basina is remarkable since it was a common practice for the Franks to name a son after a member of the family of the male-line of ancestors. Through the ages historians have been intrigued by the story of Basina since she obviously acted as a player and not as bystander ? which is not uncommon for the women of the Franks, but highly uncommon for the Italians.

Basina married Bisinus (King Of The Thuringian Franks) in 460. Bisinus was born in in Thuringia, Germany; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From "Rulers of the World" by R. F. Tapsell: "Childeric I became thethird King of the Franks in 458. He fought with the Roman Aegidiusagainst the Wisigoths. When Aegidius died in 464, he was succeeded byCount Paul. Childeric I's army helped Count Paul push back a Saxonadvance from Angers around 466. Count Paul died in 470. They had torepeat this feat around 475, since Count Paul had died and the Saxonsonce again had attempted to expand into Angers.

(Andre Castelot, Histoire de La France, Pages, 176, 200). Born: before 433, son of Merovee=Merovech, Prince des Francs and N?, Childeric I is presumed to have been at least 15 years of age by the time he succeeded his father in 448. Between 480 and 481 Childeric I's tomb in Tournai was discovered in 1653 and contained magnificent weapons. Buried: circa 481 in Tournai, Bigorre, France.

King of the Salian Franks 456-481, Childeric succeeded his semi-legendary father Merovech as king of the Salian Franks of northern Gaul in 456, during Roman times. He became infatuated with the daughters of his subjects, who were so incensed about this that they forced him to give up the throne. He discovered that they intended to assassinate him, and he fled to Thuringia, leaving a close friend and telling him to send him amessage when Childeric could return to his kingdom.

Childeric took refuge with Bisinus, King of the Thuringian Franks, and his wife Basina. The king elected by the Franks was cruel, and soon after Childeric was re-called to his kingdom by his friend, and was restored to the throne. Once Bisinus and Childeric were both kings, Basina deserted her husband and went to live with Childeric, who married her and had a son Clovis.

After a battle with Odoacer, King of the Saxons (and conquerer of the Western Roman Empire, 476), at Orleans, Childeric and the Saxon king made a peace treaty and together subdued the Alamanni, who had invaded a part of Italy. In 481 Childeric died and was succeeded by Clovis, his son by Basina.

Childeric married Basina, Princess Of Thuringia in 464 in Germany. Basina (daughter of Banin Chlodwig I (King Of Cologne) and Basina Of Saxony) was born in 444 in Thuringia, Germany; died in 489. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
