Notes:

Clotilda was the wife of Clovis I, and the daughter of Chilperic, King of Burgundians of Lyons, and Caretena. After the death of King Gundovic (Gundioch), the Kingdom of Burgundy had been divided among his four sons, Chilperic reigning at Lyons, Gondebad at Vienne, and Godegisil at Geneva; Gondemar's capital is not mentioned. Chilperic and probably Godegisil were Catholics, while Gondebad professed Arianism. Clotilda was given a religious training by her mother caretena, who, according to Sidonius Apollinaris and Fortunatus of Poitiers, was a remarkable woman. After the death of Chilperic, Caretena seems to have made her home with Godegisil at Geneva, where her other daughter, Sedeleuba, or Chrona, founded the church of Saint-Victor, and took the religious habit. It was soon after the death of Chilperic that Clovis asked and obtained the hand of Clotilda.

Clotilda married King Clovis I "The Great", of France in 492 in France. Clovis (son of King Childeric I of the FRANCS and Basina, Princess Of Thuringia) was born in 466 in Tournai, Hainault, Wallonia, Belgium; died on 27 Nov 511 in Church Of St Pierre, Paris, France; was buried in Eglise DE Saint Pierre, France. King of Orleans 511-524 - Son of Clovis I, King of the Franks, Chlodomirinherited Orleans upon Clovis' death in 511. He immediately attackedBurgundy with his brother Theuderic I, King of Metz, took King Sigismundprisoner, and had his family murdered. In 524, he invaded Burgundyatain, now under King Godomar, and was killed in battle that year.

Notes:

King of Paris 511-558 - Son of Clovis I, King of the Franks, Childebertinherited Paris on the death of Clovis in 511. In 531, Childebert wentto Spain where his sister was being mistreated by her husband, KingAmalaric of the Visigoths, because of her Catholic faith. Amalaric wasexiled, but Childebert's sister died that year. Upon returning to hiskingdom, he made peace with his brother Theuderic I, King of Metz. Hethen conspired with his other living brother, Chlotar I, King ofSoissons, to kill their three nephews who were being raised by theirmother, Saint Clotilda. At the last minute, as Chlotar was murdering thechildren, Childebert backed off and one of the children was saved. WhenTheuderic died, Chlotar, Childebert and Theudric's son Theudebert, allfought for the kingdom. Chlotar and Childebert received very smallportions, and Theudebert ascended to the throne. Theudebert andChildebert then made peace and agreed to attack their rival, Chlotar.Natural disasters prevented an attack, however, so the two kings wereforced to move on to other things. Childebert decided to turn hisattention to Spain, where he took much land in the Pyrenees. Childebertdied in 558 and his kingdom passed to Chlotar, now King of all theFranks.

King of Soissons 511-558 - King of Austrasia 555-558 - King of the Franks558-561. Son of Clovis I King of the Franks, Chlotar inherited Soissonson Clovis' death in 511. He, with his four brothers, attached and defeated Burgundy under the kings Sigisbert and Godomar early in his reign. With this oldest brother, Theuderic I, King of Metz, he attacked the Thuringian Franks under King Hermanfrid, took the kingdom, and took his daughter Radegund. Next, with his brother Childebert I, King of Paris, Chlotar murdered his nephews who were under the care of Queen Clotilda, his mother. When Theuderic died, the kingdom was up for grabs. Chlotar and Childebert each received only a small part, the most of it going to Theudebert, his son. In 555, Theudebald, who had succeeded hisfather Theudebert in Austrasia, died, and Austrasia passed to Chlotar. When Chlotar died in 561, the kingdom was divided among his four living sons: Charibert (Paris), Guntram (Burgundy), Chilperic (Soissons), andSigebert (Metz).

Married between 510 and 515: Ingonthe who was Clotaire I's first wife.She gave him a daughter and five sons, three of whom survived. Marriedcirca 516: Aregonde); Radegonde was Clotaire I's second legitimate wife.Note - between 523 and 560: In accordance with Salic Law, upon Clovis I'sdeath, his four sons [Thierry, the eldest and born from an unknownconcubine before Clovis was married, and the other three, Clodomir,Childebert and Clotaire, divided the kingdom not unlike a cake, but withunequal parts. Clotaire, the youngest, received the most primitive lands,extending from the charbonniere forest [the North of Gaule] to the SommeRiver and beyond to include Noyon, Soissons and Laon. Soissons was itscapital. The brothers constantly engaged in bloody fights in order toaugment their holdings. In 523, three of Clovis I's sons, Clotaire,Childebert and Clodomir, launch their first campaign against theBurgundians. They catch Sigismond=Zygmund, out of the Monastery ofAgaune, as well as his wife and his children. They are given to thecustody of Clodomir. He has the entire family murdered by throwing theminto a well at Saint-Peravy-la-Coulombe [near Patay] . Clotaire I becameKing of Orleans in 526 and King of Austrasie in 555. He was known for hiscruelty and plotted and implemented the murder of his brother's(Clodomir) sons with Childebert, his other brother. In July throughDecember 524, two of Clodomir's sons thus are murdered. Clodomir himselfhad died at the Battle of Vezeronce [in Isere] on 25 June 524. Clotairegets Tours and Poitiers. In 531 Thierry and Clotaire I are occupied inbattle against the Thuringians. Their King, Hermanefried died in combatby falling from a rempart in Tolbiac [with a little push] . His mother,Radegonde, who is among the captives, becomes Clotaire's third wife. In532, Clotaire and Childebert begin their third campaign against theBurgundians. This time, they take Autun. Upon Thierry;s death in 534, hislands are divided, and Clotaire gets the entire southern portion ofThierry's holdings including Grenoble, Die and neighboring cities.

In 536, Clotaire obtains the northern part of Provence encompassingOrange, Carpentras and Gap from Vitiges, King of the Ostrogoths. WhenTheobald dies in 555, Clotaire gives the Auvergne to his son, Chramne.The next year, Clotaire would fail in his campaign against the Saxons,but they will continue to pay him an annual tribute of 500 cows. Chramnerebels and fights against his father. Upon Childebert's death 23 December558, he reunited all parts of the Frankish kingdom, and Clotaire becomessole King of the Francs. The following year, his son, Chramne againrebels, but has to seek refuge with the Count of Brittany, Conober who isestablished in Vannes. In 560, they lose to Clotaire and Chramne, hiswife and their children are burnt alive on the orders of Clotaire.Married circa 547: Radegonde, Princess de Turinge , daughter of Hermanefried, King de Turinge (8164) and N? ; The Thuringians had been submitted to the Francs. Clotaire and his half-brother Thierry had led a brutal campaign against them and had crushed them on the banks of the Saale in 531. Among Clotaire's share of the bounty was a beautiful young girl, the Christian Princess Radegonde. Radegonde was Clotaire I's third legitimate wife, and fifth mate. Clotaire I was about 50 years old.

Daughter of King Clovis I and Queen Clotilda, Chrotilda was married offby her brothers to Amalaric, King of the Visigoths. He mistreated herbecause she was a Catholic (the Visigothiuc rulers were Arian). She sentto her brother King Childebert of Paris for aide; he quickly had Amalarickilled and asked his sister to return to Paris with him. For somereason, Chrotilda died on the journey.

Chramn was the rebellious son of King Chlotar I, who, after commitingmany crimes in his father's kingdom, went to Paris, the kingdom of hisuncle Childebert I. There, the two conspired to kill Chlotar. Chlotar,after learning of this alliance, sent three of his sons Gunthar, Guntram,and Charibert to defeat Chramn. When Childebert died in 588, Chlotarbecame sole ruler of all the Franks. At this time, Chramn sought audiencewith his father, but it was denied, and he went into personal exile inBrittany. In 560, Chlotar, furious with his son, attacked Brittany anddefeated Chramn, who was then executed on the order of his father.

King of Burgundy 561-592 - When Chlotar, King of the Franks, died in 561,his kingdom was divided among his four sons: Charibert I (Paris),Sigebert I (Metz), Guntram (Burgundy), and Chilperic I (Soissons).Guntram married his servant Veneranda, then married Marcatrude, daughterof Magnachar. Marcatrude, who was jealous of Veneranda, poisonedGundobad, but God took her son in return (not by Guntram). Guntram thenmarried Austrechild, and they had two sons.

In 573, a civil war began between Guntram and his brother King Sigebertof Metz. In 575, Guntram allied with his brother King Chilperic ofSoissons against Sigebert, but Guntram switched his alliance to Sigebertin the middle of the war, and Chilperic was forced to retreat. Later thatyear, Sigebert was assassinated, and Chilperic invaded the kingdom, nowunder the rule of King Childebert II, Sigebert's young son. Guntramordered his commander Mummolus to attack Chilperic, whose generalDesiderius was defeated. In 577, Guntram's two living sons, Chlotar andChlodomer, died of dysentery, leaving Guntram childless. That year, headopted his nephew Childebert II, King of Austrasia, and the two made alasting alliance against Chilperic. In 581, war again broke out betweenGuntram and Chilperic, who took many cities from him. In 583, Chilpericand Childebert both attacked Guntram, however Guntram and Chilperic madepeace and Childebert pulled out his forces.

In 584, Chilperic died and his evil Queen Fredegund ruled the land in thename of her infant son Chlotar II. The next year, Guntram attackedChildebert, taking Poitiers, Tours, and other cities. He had to pull outto attend the baptizm of Chlotar in Orleans on the Feast of Saint Martin,July 4, but the child was not brought. Guntram then invaded GothicSeptimania, but peace was then made. In 587, Queen Fredegund attempted anassassination of Guntram that failed. That year, on November 28, KingGuntram, King Childebert II, Queen Brunhild, Chlodosind, Queen Faileuba,Magneric, Bishop of Trier, Ageric, Bishop of Verdun, and Duke GuntramBoso all met in Trier and made the Treaty of Andelot that lasted untilGuntram's death. In 589, Guntram again invaded Septimania but wasrepelled. In 590, Guntram and Childebert ordered many bishops from theirkingdoms to settle a revolt at a nunnery in Poiters that had grown quitelarge. In 592, Guntram died, and King Childebert II of Austrasia took theKingdom of Burgundy under his crown.

King of Metz 561-575 - Sigebert inherited the kingdom of Metz on thedeath of his father Chlotar in 561. In 562, Sigebert defeated a Hunnicarmy that invaded Gaul, and peace was made between the two forces. Atthat time, his brother Chilperic, King of Soissons, invaded Metz and tookseveral cities rightly belonging to Sigebert, thus starting a civil war.Sigebert marched to the city of Soissons, exiled Theudebert, Chilperic'sson in command of the city, and then beat Chilperic in battle. Sigebertmarried Brunhild, the Arian daughter of King Anthanagild of theVisigoths, who was converted to Catholicism. In 566 the Huns againinvaded Metz, and this time were successful over Sigebert. The next year,Sigebert's brother King Charibert of Paris died, and his kingdom wasdivided between the three living sons of Chlotar. Right away, Chilpericinvaded Sigebert's share. He attacked Tours and left his son Clovis incommand. Clovis was driven out of Tours by Sigebert, and then driven outof Bordeaux by Sigulf (573), one of Sigebert's generals. Civil war thenbegan between Sigebert and his other brother King Guntram of Burgundy,and, at the same time, Theudebert (son of Chilperic before mentioned)invaded Metz and destroyed many cities. In 574, Sigebert allied himselfwith Guntram and planned to counter, but when Guntram shifted hisalliance from Chilperic to Sigebert that was enough to make himsurrender. However the next year, Chilperic succeeded in winning back hisbrother Guntram, and another war was started with Sigebert. Theudebertwas beaten and killed, Guntram again swiched alliances, and Chilpericagain retreated. This year, however, Sigebert was assassinated, and hiskingdom passed to his son Childebert II.

In his ability to generate spouses, Chilperic was no more elegant than his debauched brother Gontran. Audovere was Chilperic's first wife and bore him Merovee, [though some argue that he was Galwinthe's (Chilperic's second wife) son] Theodebert and Clovis, as well as a daughter, Hildeswinthe. Her servant, Fredegonde [whom Chilperic I immediately took as his concubine], may have been instrumental in her demise in her own drive to come to the throne. Note - between 561 and 584: Upon the death of his father Clotaire I, Chilperic I's share of the estate makes him King of Soissons and he reigns from 561 to 584. After the death of his brother, Caribert I in 567, Chilperic I gets Toulouse, as well as the largest part of the ecclesiastical provinces of Rouen and Tours, which gives him a wide access to the sea. Desiring to take revenge on his brother Sigebert I -- Chilperic could not swallow the loss of Galswinthe's dowry in 569 through the Andelot Accord -- Chilperic charges his son Clovis [born of his first union with Audovere] with the occupation of Tours and of Poitiers. Chilperic's other son, [also byAudovere] Theodebert defeats the Austrasian general Gondevald. The warbetween the brothers extends into 574 and 575 at which time the kingdomis invaded, and Chilperic is forced to take refuge in Tournai, and theGreat Nobles [viri in lustres] abandon him. After Siegbert is murdered in575, Chilperic and Fredegonde come out of Tournai. Chilperic piouslyburries his brother [whom he just had murdered] at Lambres, Chilperic I'sreign was marked by many wars he waged against his brothers for theterritories of the kingdom. He was assassinated. He was the King ofNeustrie.

Married between 562 and 584: Galswinthe=Galswitha, daughter ofAthanagild, King of Spain, Chilperic's second wife, and she may have beenthe mother of Merovee, herein ascribed to the first wife. She was to dieby strangling in a plot originated by Fredegonde (Chilperic's thirdwife). This murder began a bloody feud between Fredegonde and Brunehaut(Galswinthe's sister). Married before 584: Fredegonde; First the servantof Audovere, then first wife of Chilperic, Fredegonde was beautiful andambitious. She first had Chilperic I repudiate Audovere and lock her upin a monastery, where the unfortunate was murdered on the orders ofFredegonde after 15 years of solitary confinement. However, all did notgo immediately well, for when Chilperic learned of the brilliant marriageof his younger brother, Sigebert to Brunehaut, he arranged to haveFredegonde relegated to her role as concubine and asked Athanagild forthe hand of another of his daughter, the older sister of Brunehaut, namedGalswinthe. He promised in turn that he would repudiate all his otherspouses so as to be worthy of a wife of such royal blood. When Galswinthearrived, she was greeted with honor and respect as she brought anextensively rich treasure as dowry with her. Fredegonde had Galswitha,second wife of Chilperic strangled and replaced her on the throne. Thismurder began the feud with Brunehaut, Galswinthe's sister.

She had her husband assassinated and had the Archbishop of Rouen(Pretexta) killed. She governed Neustrie in the name of her young sonClothaire II. Died: in 584 in Chelles, Seine-et-Marne, Champagne, France,Chilperic was assassinated, reportedly by a hired hand of Fredegonde ashe was returning from a hunt in Chelles [Seine-et-Marne] . His body wasshipped up the Marne and was buried in the Basilica de Saint-Vincent,near Paris [Saint-Germain-des-Pres].

Theudebert was the son of King Chilperic I of Soissons by one of hisfirst wives. When his father had recently become king, they started acivil war with Chilperic's brother King Sigebert of Soissons. Sigebertwas victorious, marched on Soissons, defeated Theudebert who was incommand of the garrison there, and imprisoned him for one year. AfterKing Charibert of Paris (another of Chilperic's brothers) had died in567, Theudebert invaded Sigebert's lands again and destroyed many cities.In 575, another civil war was started between Chilperic, Sigebert, andGuntram (Chilperic's third brother) in which Theudebert was defeated andkilled.

Merovech was the son of King Chilperic of Soissons by one of his firstwives. His father ordered him to march on Poitiers, but he instead wentto Tours, took the city, and married Brunhild, the widow of his lateuncle King Sigebert of Metz. Chilperic was very angry, and the two agreedto separate while in Rouen. There in Rouen, Chilperic and Merovech droveout Clovis (Chilperic's son) and Queen Fredegund (Chilperic's wife),taking the city. Merovech was put in the custody of his father and wasmade a priest to Le Mans. He instead returned to Tours seeking sanctuaryfrom his father. Chilperic found out and Merovech fled the city toChampagne. In 578, Merovech again sought sanctuary in Tours but waskilled on the order of his father.

The revolt grew so large that the KingGuntram of Burgundy and King Childebert II of Austrasia asked bishopsfrom their kingdoms to handle it, since Count Macco of Poiters could not.And so, Ebregisel, Bishop of Cologne, Maroveus, Bishop of Poitiers, SaintGregory, Bishop of Tours, and Gundegisel, Bishop of Bordeaux passedjudgement to restore the Abbess to her position and to excommunicate bothBasina and Clotild. In 590, they were both pardoned by the king andrecommunicated by the bishops, and Basina returned to the nunnery whereshe spent the rest of her life in obedience to her Abbess.

Notes:

Rigunth was the daughter of King Chilperic of Soissons and QueenFredegund who was promised to King Recared I of the Visigoths. She wasnever married to him, however, and was sent to exil in Spain. In 584, hermother, now in control of Soissons, called her back and she lived therest of her life in the court there. The fights between her and hermother are said to have often gotten near fatal (Gregory of Tours tellsof a time when Fredegund nearly choked her to death after shutting herhead in the lid of a chest and sitting on it with all her might!).

Samson was a son of King Chilperic of Soissons. In 578 he was rejected byhis mother, but his father urged that he be baptized a Catholic. Hebecame ill that year and died the next.

King of Newustria, KING OF SOISSONS, King of France

Upon Clotaire's birth, his mother had his father assassinated and ruled Neustrie in his name. He became King of Soissons in 584, and was sole King of the Franks in 613. He had his aunt Brunehaut (sister of hisfather's second wife) killed. In the year 596, through his mother Fredegonde, Clotaire II's territories were extended in the East. In 599, King Theodebert II of Austrasia and King Thierry II of Burgundy joinedforces to take revenge upon Clotaire II. The Army of Neustria is beatten and the entire valley of the Seine is devastated. As a result, ThierryII's territory increased by taking away from Clotaire II, the lands between the Seine and the Loire. Theodebert II takes the lands of the Duchy of Dentelin. In 604, the Mayor of the Palace, Bertaut arouses the subjects against the King of Burgundy and they call on Clotaire II for help. On Christmas Day, 604, Clotaire rushes to their aid and crosses the Seine and pushes all to way to Orleans. On his return, he encounters an Army of Bourgogne, and is defeated at Etampes at which battle Bertaut is killed. Because Theodebert had not intervened, actually he had made peace in Compiegne with Clotaire II, Thierry II took offense and the two brothers became less than thrilled with each other. Brunehaut, unhappy with Theodebert, names as next Mayor of the Palace a Gallo-Roman named Protadius. In 607, she pushed Thierry II to take up arms against his brother. During the battle, Protadius is killed and the two brothers make peace, humiliating their mother, Brunehaut. By 612, the brothers again were at war and Thierry II purchases Clotaire's neutrality by offering him the Duchy of Dentelin. In 613 Clotaire II invades Austrasia upon the death of Thierry II, kills two of Thierry's sons [the other twodisappear] , and has Brunehaut killed after the lords of Burgundy seizeher and give her to him. At her "trial" Clotaire II had accused Brunehaut of having caused the death of ten frankish Kings:
1. Sigebert her first spouse, who was assassinated [though through nofault of Brunehaut] ;
2. Merovee, the son of Chilperic I [who was actually assassinated on theorders of Fredegonde] ;
3. Chilperic [killed in 584, and through no part from Brunehaut] ;
4. Theodebert II
5. of his son Clotaire [it is possible that Brunehaut had Cloraireassassinated after he deserted her] ;
6. Merovee, son of Clotaire II [highly doubtful that Brunehaut had a partin this murder] ;
7. Thierry II and his three sons [Thierry died of dysentery, and 8-10.his three sons were massacred on the order of Clotaire II himself]. For3 days, Clotaire II personally tortures Brunehaut, then he parades hertied cross-wise to the back of a camel in front of his entire assembledarmy. Finally, he had her hair, and limbs tied to a wild horse which wasallowed to run within a confined space while being beaten, therebyecausing every limb to be broken and shortly thereafter she died at age 60to 65. At this time, Clotaire II becomes the only surviving descendant ofthe sons of Clovis. He governs the Frankish Kingdom from the Pyrenees tothe Rhine and beyond all the way to the Elbe, and the germanic peoplesmust pay him tribute. However, his power is limitted as in each of thethree ancient kingdoms [Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy] the Major Domus[Mayor of the Palace] becomes progressively more important. Submitting tothe pressure of these mayors, Clotaire, Clotaire II on 23 January 623makes his son Dagobert, King of occidental Austrasia [West of the Vosgesand the Ardennes] as well as of Aquitaine. Again under pressure, in 626,Clotaire gives Dagobert Gomatrude [his wife's sister] as spouse. Threedays after the wedding, Dagobert claims all of Austrasia was his, butClotaire keeps control over Provence and Aquitaine. Married before 603:Bertrude . Married before 604: Haldetrude ; Haldetrude was one of threewives.

King of Soissons 584-613 & King of the Franks 613-629 - When his father,King Chilperic I of Soissons died in 584, Chlotar was not yet even born.Until 597, his kingdom was administered by his mother, Queen Fredegund,but when she died that year he bagan to rule for himself, now 13 yearsold. In 613, the Austrasian and Burgundian kings, Theudebert II andTheuderic II respectively, had died, and Queen Brunhild had placed theyoung Sigebert II on the throne of those two kingdoms. That year, the 29year old Chlotar had Sigebert and Brunhild killed, and became the firstking of all the Franks since his grandfather Chlotar I died in 561. In615, Chlotar passed the Edict of Paris, a sort of French Magna Carta thatgreatly pleased the nobles across the kingdom. In 623, he gave thekingdom of Austrasia to his young son Dagobert I, which was a politicalmove giving Pepin I, Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, and Bishop Arnulfof Metz, the two leading Austrasian nobles, semi-autonomy for theirloyalty to Chlotar. In 629, Chlotar died and Dagobert became sole king,moving his capital from Austrasia to Paris.
