Will 31 Oct 1778 Prior to the War of Revolution, a father and five children came from England to America. Two of the sons fell fighting with the colonial army for American independence. One of the remaining three was numbered among the founders of the Mechlenberg colony in NC." Appears to have reached majority by 1737 (land left to brother is left in a trust) - Cashed out circa 1739 having already migrated 50 miles to the south to Edgecombe Precinct, NC. Began acquiring land in the Halifax/Edgecombe, NC area - source Clay Abrams.
In the will he left realty to his son by his second wife (Temple) "Briton" (Brittain) and directed that the remainder of his estate be divided equally "between all my children."

WILLIAM CAME TO HICKMAN COUNTY AND PERRY COUNTY IN TENNESSEE AS EARLY AS 1813, AND CROSSED OVER INTO DECATUR COUNTY IN WEST TENNESSEE ABOUT 1820 TO 1822, AFTER TREATY WITH INDIANS, AND THEIR REMOVAL. WE, ARE NOT SURE AT THE PRESENT TIME, BUT FEEL VERY STRONG THAT IT IS A POSSIBILITY THAT MY GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-GRANDPARENTS WERE ALSO ANOTHER WILLIAM GULLEDGE, AND WIFE TEMPLE JONES GULLEDGE, AS WE HAVE FOUND A RECORD OF MARRIAGE LICENSE BEING ISSUED TO THEM AT THE DAVIDSON COUNTY COURT HOUSE-NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. Settled in Perry County Tennessee old 5th Distric which became 12th Distric,Decatur County in 1845. Mr Gulledge settled on the Gulledge branch and Cub Creek. He was burried at the old Gulledge settlers grave yard on A bluff on the Gulledge Branch. (Note in book I do not know where AB got the information and do not know if it is any relation to these Gulledges) A William Gulledge and a Tomas Gulledge had militay service with the Militia, Probly the state Militia in the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Rearch is needed on theifr famly too.
Where Sarah was born not clear 1960 census shows her being born in GA. maybe SC. Sara died 1869 at old home place Gulledge branch and Cub Creek. Buried at the old Gulledge settlere's graveyard

Notes:
Very little is known about the background of the Gullage Family. Most of the information that could be found came from a journal that John Gullage kept on his journey from around Cheraw and Society Hill, South Carolina. The earliest date found in the journal of John Gullage was July 1, 1825; therefore, he must have been born in the early 1800's or the very late 1790's.

Late in the evening on a Christmas Eve, probably in the year 1847, some of our McCall ancestors (John Gullage's family) arrived at their first home in Mississippi. They had traveled for 44 days by wagon train through rain, snow, hail, and flood from Society Hill, South Carolina.
The entries in this journal made after 1862 are believed to have been made by Thomas Gullage McCall.
All the information in this research is the work of several persons: Dr. D.A. McCall and his wife Margie Parks McCall who preserved the John Gullage journal; Thomas Joseph and Florrie Jones McCall for their encouragement and for much of the supporting data and information; John Cullum Halbrook, Jr. for beginning this genealogy which is so important to all of us; and ?Mugga? (Ernestine McCall Halbrook) to whom family was so important and instilled that same love of family in her children.
Note: This journal is in a handwritten journal. The earliest date in it is July 1, 1825 and the latest is 1875. It lists receipts for payments and work done, mail route expenses, and postage charges; it also relates brotherhood signs and signals, church meetings, and ?cures for charbon and flusk.? It was begun by John Gullage and continued by his nephew Thomas Gullage McCall. Thomas Gullage McCall was remembered by one son Duncan Dent McCall as being a small man who in later life had a slight limp. He was a good mechanic and blacksmith who could cut grooves in a log to make the big screw for the press that baled cotton after it was ginned. It was said that he had a mail route somewhere between Mobile, Alabama, and Laurel, Mississippi, and during the Civil War was at times given special shoes with messages hidden in them. On July 18, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Company D, Second Regiment of Mississippi State Troops which is noted in ?A History of Simpson County to 1865? (p. 161) as Barwicks County, Fourth Cavalry of Company D, Second Quinns State Troops.

He and wife were land owners in North Davidson County on Little Marrowbone at the time of the Civil War. He received one or more land grants. Jesse owned slaves prior to war. The Civil War took both their livestock and their food. His grandson, Walter Davis, wound up living on a part of Jesse T. Carney's land at the time of Andrew Carnegie Davis's birth. The present house on that land has some of the original logs in its structure. Jesse T. Carney is buried on his former land; his tombstone is the only one there.

Dr. Hiram B. Carney, dealer in drugs and general merchandise, was born in Davidson County, March 31,1837. He is of German-Irish de- scent and the son of E. B. Carney and Unity (Lewis) Carney. His par- ents were both born in Tennessee. His father, born in 1811, was a farmer by occupation. He died in 1878. The mother of Dr. Carney was born in 1821 and died in 1852.
The life of Dr. Carney was spent on the farm until at the age of twenty-one years he began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. J. P. Dromgoole in 1858, at Shelbyville, Tenn. In 1859 he continued the study of medicine at Ashland City under Dr. Joseph Hudson, attended lectures at Nashville University and then practiced medicine at Ashland City. In 1879 he took a second course of lectures at Vanderbilt University and graduated in 1880. Since that time he has been doing only an office practice. In Octcter, 1882, he began the drug business, also general merchandise and is in that busi- ness at the present. November 20, 1860, he was married to Miss Ten- nessee Lenox, born in what is now Cheatham County in 1844. By this marriage two children were born, Ellata and Jenner. He is a Democrat and was made a Mason in 1872; he is also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a prosperous physician and for twenty-five years has been the leading physician of this county.

Thomas E. and Lena Carney Frensley had fraternal twins in 1900, Ethel and Earl Frensley. Lena Carney Frensley was buried in David Read's lot, Sec 15 in Nashville's City Cemetery on 02 Jun 1942. Her grandfather John G. Brown was also buried in Read's lot on 02 Dec 1875.

"I went through an odd assortment of paper scraps left by our great grandfather John Spencer Carney. I found a few tax receipts ~1895 where he had paid land taxes for a Mrs. E. W. Carney who owned 40 acres."

From Robert Spencer Carney:
My Gt Grandfather John Spencer Carney was a country doctor and farmer who died in 1901, about 50 (52) years old. He did not have a medical degree but was licensed on the basis of apprenticeship. Oral tradition was that he was a medical aid or something similar for the Confederate Army. If true, he would have just been a young teenager. Most medical people in the South were civilians, not in the military, and not strictly veterans. Thus, documentation is absent. Sometime after the war he moved from Cheatam Co west to Haywood Co TN. My Aunt Ruth told me that he had a farm and had his medical office in his home on the farm. After Dr Carney's death his widow and 3 sons (Joseph Monroe, Claude Shannon & Hiram Spencer) moved slightly west to Ripley in Lauderdale Co.
Explaining west Tn geography. That part of the state was only opened for white settlement in 1820's. Lauderdale Co is on the Mississippi River. Ripley was a thriving farming town... mostly cotton. John Spencer settled just to the east in Haywood Co. Tn. Modern maps show his farm's location (Carney Road) as in Lauderdale Co. The closest cross-roads town is Nutbush Tn. It's most notable as the singer Tina Turner's hometown.
