On St. Rt. 14 eleven miles south of Mexia in Limestone County, Texas in 1834, Elder John Parker and his sons, Silas,James and Benjamin F., built Fort Parker stockade. There is a replica of the fort on land deeded to the State in 1933 by private owners. (Texas Handbook via the internet).
John Parker was a Revolutionary Soldier, Serial # S32435. He served in the 2nd and 3rd Regiment of the Continental Army of Virginia. After the war he moved to Elbert, Georgia. Here John was made an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church.
He moved to Bedford County, Tennessee and lived there for about twelve years, and then moved to Crawford County, Illinois in 1814. It was here that Sarah "Sally" White died and also that John remarried. He married Sally Duty, the 21st of March 1825.
From LaFaye C. Sutkin, Ph.D. - [email protected]
Hardships in VA after the Revolutionary War caused John Parker to move his family to Elbert Co., GA. As civilization made inroads into GA, he decided to move his family to TN where economic possibilities were rumored to bo better. This trek was made about 1803.
Qfter listening to the stories of trappers, the Parkers and many of their congregation, set off for IL, where Sallie died, and then off to TX.
About 1832, the Parker family moved to Texas from Quincy, IL, taking the Baptist Church in IL with them. On Sat. evenings they would pitch their tents and on Sun. all of the ordinances of the Church were observed.
The caravan of the Parkers came up on the east side of the Navasota River until they struck the old San Antonio Road and made their way to the present Houston County, near the north line of the present town of Grapeland. From this place the Parker clan scattered. Daniel took his children and went a few miles north to what is now Elkhart, in Anderson Co.. Silas, James, Benjamin and Elder John pushed on to the west. They first took their families to the last fort that was thought to be safe from Indian attack, Fort Houston, which is about 2 mi. west of the present city of Palestine, Anderson Co., TX. The fort was an important point of frontier defense from 1836-1839. It was abandoned in 1841, and later the site became home of Judge John H. Reagan, called Ft. Houston.
Elder John, Silas, and James W. Parker moved on to the head of the Navasota River in present Limestone Co., near the present Groesbeck. Here they erected Parker's Fort, a kind of wooden barracade or wall around their cabins, as a means of protection against hostile Indians.
On the morning of May 9, 1836, Indians attacked the fort and Elder John was killed. He is buried at Fort Parker and is one of the two revolutionary soldiers buried in TX.
Fort Parker has been rebuilt by the State of Texas and completely restored, even to some iron cooking vessels of John Parker, which are in his cabin in the center row of fort cabins.
LaFaye C. Sutkin, Ph. D. has contributed a good deal of material on the Parker Family using her aunt's book "Reagan-Parker Family Genealogy".

The earliest document record of a Nathaniel Parker being the father of Susannah (Parker) Daughhetee and the Elder John Parker is from page 16 of the 1934 book The History of the Daughhetee's. It's unknown whether the above referenced confusion of the Nathaniel Parker of Sumner Co. TN. as the father was already occurring. If so, then Nathaniel Parker as the father may be a red herring and the early Baltimore County, MD. records need to be searched for the parents of the Elder John Parker, Daniel Parker, Susannah (Parker) Daughhetee, Arron Parker.....

When Moses Parker came from Georgia to Dickson County, Tennessee, in 1804, all he had was 2 horses, a rifle, an ax, handsaw, and knife, wife and 4 children. The first Primitive Baptist Church was organized in the Parker home in 1810.
(JHC) On Headstone at Parker Cemetary, Dickson, Tennessee: PARKER, Moses 10/31/1773-8/9/1855; s/o Daniel Parker & Sarah Mackintosh; Wife: Hannah Johnson b. 1780

The Parker's Creek area was settled in 1804 by Moses Parker and his family when he and his uncle, Elder John Parker, received permission from the governor of Georgia to leave Elbert County to visit the "Natchez Indian Territory". Their family eventually established the Turnbull Primitive Baptist Church in 1806 and remains the oldest continuously meeting church in Dickson County. Elder John Parker was a Primitive Baptist Church missionary that moved from place to place establishing churches & according to church records Moses' father Daniel Parker was the Turnbull Primitive Baptist congregation's first minister. Moses received a land grant from James Robertson of Davidson County dated Aug. 27th 1808 in payment for 6 months service in the late regiment. "When he landed at his destination all he had was two horses which bore the household goods, a rifle, chopping axe, hand saw, drawing knife, wife & 4 children. He quickly built a cabin & a mill & cleared a considerable farm in which he cultivated & raised plenty of provisions for home consumption", (Hickman Pioneer 1887). Elder John Parker soon left to spread the gospel in Crawford County, IL & later to Limestone Co. TX. It was here that he met his maker at the hands of the Commanches during the raid on Fort Parker on May 19, 1836. His granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Parker was captured & went on to live with the tribe for years later marrying the Chief Peta Nocona & giving birth to Praire Flower & the great Commanche Chief Quannah Parker. The John Wayne / Natalie Wood movie "The Searchers" is loosely based upon this story.

Back in Dickson Co. TN, Parker's Creek was named for Moses after he killed a bear & cut his name in a tree in 1808. An early Dickson County land deed dated 1827 & signed by Moses refers to "the waters of Parker's Mill Creek" in its survey. After Moses's death in 1852 his daughter, Indiana Territory Parker & her husband Daniel Spencer, remained here and raised a family. The earliest documentation establishing the operation as Spencer's Mill appear just before the Civil War in 1856. The mill was operated by Daniel & Indiana's son, Samuel Spencer, as a water turbine driven corn & flour mill. In order to grind corn and wheat for local farmers in this area, French burr stones were bought & shipped for $14.14 from overseas and used as ballasts for weight during the passage across the Atlantic. The mill became the center of the community where everything from rifles to coffins were manufactured. Even the first thresher in the county was constructed here. Spencer's Mill boasted a wood & blacksmith shop, two stores, a saw mill and a post office. Mail was received semi-weekly in the community from Jan 18, 1878-April 14, 1906. William A. Lampley was its first postmaster.
By the turn of the century the center of business had shifted to the nearby town of Burns because of railroad access built there during the Civil War. At that time the town was known simply as Grade 36 because of the mileage to Nashville from there. Later the name was changed to Burns Station. Many believe that the town was named in honor of the president of the Nashville & Northwestern raidroad Michael Burns which makes the most sense since he served as president from 1861-1865. Another old story states that the town was named for a Yankee Captain John Burns that commanded a detachment of black troops there during the war used to finish the railroad from Kingston Springs to Johnsonville & the Tennessee River. While it is true that black troops were used to construct the railroad, there has been no evidence found to back this up that such a man as Capt. Burns existed. In addition, Dickson County only supplied Confederate troops during the War Between the States & didn't exactly support this envasion of Southern soil by the Yankee invaders. Alexander Duval McNairy's 1864 Raid in Burns is a prime example of this. For more on this railroad please visit (visit link) Anyhow, the "Station" in Burns Station was later dropped in favor of simply "Burns".

By 1919 Samuel's son, William Spencer Sr., was forced to sell the mill. Jeff Lampley bought the building & dismantled it. The story passed down is that the roof joists were used for the old local 7 Gables Inn that is no longer in existence. The operation of the mill was reborn ten miles away next to the tracks on Railroad Street in Burns. The mill was rebuilt as a new two story linear structure, & passed down to his son, Sammy , then to his brother William Jr., and finally sold to Jewell J. Richardson. In its new building the mill ran on various power sources, including a steam engine and a diesel generator from the old Burns Electric Department until sometime in 1945. At this time Spencer's Mill ceased operation sitting dormant & in disrepair for almost fifty years. Trish & Tim Miller purchased the mill in 1993 and moved it back to the original mill site on Parker's Creek where a faithful restoration began. In time, the present owners intend to operate the mill once again & preserve this as a local historical area. In the meantime cornmeal is being ground on site by a portable gasoline powered mill & complimentary bags are available. Located just off the intersection of Abiff & Spencer Mill Road on Old Spencer Mill Road in southeastern Dickson County, Middle Tennessee.

The mill was operated by Daniel and Indiana's son, Samuel Spencer, as a water turbine driven corn and flour mill. Obituary of John D. Parker
"Brother John D. Parker, a venerable father in Israel, was removed from the church militant to the church triumphant on the 29th of March 1878, in the 80th year of his age.
In early life he professed religion and joined the M.E. Church, and from this time to the day of his death he continued to manifest the desire of salvation by doing "no harm", and "by doing good," both to the bodies and souls of men, so much so, that he was a model Christain. He loved the Church of Christ, especially the branch of it to which he belonged. He loved her institutions and ordinances.
For over fifty years he held the office of class leader, and was for the most of the time was a steward. As a class leader, he was very efficient, watching closely after the spiritual interest to those committed to his care, and if any one of his class should in any way violate the laws of the church, or go astray in any way, he set himself to work at once to restore such a one; and if by prayers and exhortations he failed to restore him, he at once brought him before the church - always with loving kindness. With dram drinkers or drunkards in the church, he had little patience. As a steward he was faithful, discharging his duty acceptably. He made it a rule for many years at the fourth quarterly conference to ask, "What is our church behind?" and if there was any deficiency, would invariably foot the bill. As a citizen he was highly esteemed. Being a man of sound judgment, his neighbors sought his counsel in almost all of their differences; and his godly counsels were almost invariably heeded and obeyed. In the pursuits of the secular business of life he was diligent and strictly honest. By the strict observance of the "golden rule," he but seldom, if ever, had a bitter feeling against him, although his business caused him to have to deal, more or less, with all classes of men. He was blessed with almost uninterrupted health, being very robust and active up to some five years past, when his physical and mental powers began to give way. For the past two years he had but little mind left; but in all of his mental deficiency he never forgot the Church of God - would often go to the failed to go on the regular church day and seemed conscious that his time was drawing previous to his death he spoke of his approaching before any one knew that he was any worse than returned to him, and he talked with his son of to heaven. LAST WILL OF LEWIS PARKER
    STATE OF GEORGIA, HART COUNTY
In the name of God, Amen.
    I. Lewis Parker of said state and county, of advanced age and knowing that I must shortly depart this life, deem it right and proper both as respects my family and myself that I should make a disposition of the property with which a kind Providence has blessed me, do therefore make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others heretofore made by me.
1st Item. I desire and direct that my body be buried in a decent and Christian-like manner, suitable to my circumstances and conditions of life. My soul, I trust, shall return to rest with God who gave it.
2nd Item. I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid by my executors hereinafter appointed.
3rd Item. It is my will and desire that my three single daughters, Barbara Rebecca Jane, Frances Clemantine, and Elvira Manerva, have the use of the homestead and plantation, or such portions of it as they may need together with the family tools and stock of every kind after selling off enough to pay the debts, with the growing crop and provisions on hand so long as they or either of them remain single, or until they voluntarily forsake it as a home.
It is my will and desire that my three unmarried daughters have each a cow, a bed, and furniture all to be worth fifty dollars whenever they may need them to make them equal with those married.
It is my will and desire that my youngest son, Seaborn Parks, have the sorrel colt not yet a year old which I consider, when he comes to maturity, will be equal in value to the horse and saddle of my other sons.
When my plantation is no longer required as above mentioned it is my will and desire that it be sold together with the farming tools and stock and whatever else pertains to it, and distribute as follows:
4th Item. I give and bequeath to my daughters, Arminda E. A. Allison, to my daughter Nancy C. Pearman; to the orphan child of my deceased daughter Mary C. Kay; to my daughter, Barbara Rebecca Jane; to my daughter Frances Clemantine; and my daughter Elvira Manerva, fifty dollars each to make their portions equal with that already received by my three sons.
After the above mentioned bequest is paid off it is my will and desire that the residue of my estate be equally divided between my three sons, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Henry Howard, Seaborn Parks, my five daughters above mentioned and the orphan child of my deceased daughter, Mary C. Kay.
5th Item. I hereby constitute and appoint my worthy friend, Jefferson Holland executor of this my last will and testament, this the 20th, November, 1865.
Signed, sealed, and published by Lewis Parker as his last will and testament in the presence of us, the subscribers who subscribe their names hereunto of said testator at his special instance and request and of each other.
    November 20, 1865.
