This line of Oliphants is known to have resided in Dickson County as well as in Rutherford and Williamson Counties.

Kizzie May's death certificate indicates her death at such an early age was caused by "Asphyxia" contributed to by "Laryngeal Diphtheria." She is buried in Section N, Row 3, Grave 30 in Spring Hill Cemetery. It seems a shame that Kizzie died of diphtheria when that illness is easily taken care of now days.

Death Certificate: It shows Jesse's father as being James H. Carney and mother Kizzie May Oliphant. Cause of death was carcinoma (cancer) of lung at 7:45pm on 25 Dec 1965. His occupation is listed as Accountant. Place of his birth is listed as Baltimore, Maryland. Shows he was in the Army from 1921 to 1936. He died in the State Pulmonary Disease Hosp. in Butte and the length of stay was 215 days.

He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, 3910 Harrison Avenue, Butte, MT 59701 - Phone: 406-494-2504. The inscription on his tombstone, besides his name, date of birth (11 Feb 1904) and date of death, was "MONT. CPL, 33RD INFANTRY REGT., WWI".

Born in Denver at Fitzsimmons Gen Hospital, Room 12/W.S. Ward in April and moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming to visit grandparents and pick up brother Charles at the Strauss's. In mid August, they moved back to Denver until May 1928 when they moved back to Junction City, through until Sept 5, 1930.

At age 4, James stayed with Mrs. Kennedy's at Oceanport, New Jersey while father was stationed at Ft. Mammoth, NJ. Then the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri just about as James was turning 5. James stayed on the Strauss farm there until 2nd grade and at age 7 moved back into Junction City with mother and all the kids. The family moved through 3 houses until at age 15, James was confirmed in June of 1942, still in Jct City, Missouri.

Met Erma in hospital (Sanitarium) where James was being treated for 3 months for fluid on his lungs. James continued on as an orderly once well and they grew to love each other thru meetings and love notes. James also worked as an aircraft riveter and a dishwasher at a restaurant to bring income home to his family. After marriage to Erma in Leavenworth while living in Kansas City Missouri, they lived there from 1946 to 1949. They then moved to Phoenix where they lived from 1949-1950 (6 months), until moving onto Los Angeles, where they lived for 6 months. From there, Lee (assumed use of middle name) and James moved to Banning, California where they lived from 1950-1953, at 690 N. Park. James worked selling newspaper adds, sign painter, movie credits artist, and as a rodman (surveyor) during these periods.

In 1951, James joined the US Navy Reserve, CB's, Ser # 417-67-81 where he was a Surveyor Third Grade. In 1953 they moved to Calimesa, CA where they lived for 6 months and adopted Karen and David, because they had been trying for 7 years to conceive children, but were unsuccessful. Afterwards, the family moved back to Banning, from 1954 to 1956 where James III was born in 1955. In 1956 the family moved to Rialto, California where they lived from 1956 to 1960, along with several foster children (at times up to 4 foster children and Karen, David and Jimmy).

In June 1960, the families moved to Tucson, Arizona on doctors advise to help dry out the lungs of ErmaLea (new use of name). Joan was born in 1960; Karen underwent a heart surgery for a hole in her heart, David underwent surgery in the groin area, Jimmy had a pin placed in a broken arm and James and ErmaLea were involved in a serious accident a mile from home, which broke her jaw and involved other injuries. James worked for Blanton and Co as an engineer.

In 1967, the family moved to Phoenix, where James started his own Engineering firm. James and Erma eventually divorced in 1973 shortly after Jim & Lois were married, and James married Linda, his former secretary, and moved to Tucson, Arizona. Following the two-year marriage, James divorced Linda and moved to Rawlings, Wyoming where he became the City Engineer and lived for approximately 7 years. While there he met Marge and they married in 1979.

Eventually, James and Marge moved to Chicago suburbs and then onto Champaign, Illinois where James worked as the Public Works Director until retirement. James continued his hobbies in gardening, remodeling and painting until his death after a two week illness in January 2009.

Paul J. Carney,77, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.

Paul was born January 18, 1929 in Junction City, the son of Jesse M. and Pauline J. (Strauss) Carney.

Paul married Mary Lou Scucchi on April 15, 1950 in Topeka.

He was employed as a painter at Goodyear, retiring in 1988. Following retirement, they moved to Las Vegas where he was a member of the Lamb of God Lutheran Church and sang in the men's choir. They returned to Topeka in 2002. Paul was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and active in choir.

Survivors include his wife of the home; their children, Steven Carney, Danville, Virginia, Sharon Haigh, Manhattan, Diana Arnold, John Carney, Daryl Carney and Janet Whitaker, all of Topeka; brothers, James Carney, Champagne, Illinois, Ted Carney, Topeka; a sister, Evelyn Costigan, Olathe; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Carney, and brother-in-law, Lloyd Costigan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church. Mr. Carney will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.

11 January 2020 email from Eva: Evelyn Carney Costigan was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, it has also spread to her liver, lungs and spine so there is nothing that can be done except keep her as comfortable as possible. She is at home and Greg has taken off work to be there for her. This is very hard for him as you can imagine as they are very close. Lou Ann is still with Evelyn but isn't in the best of health now either.

Evelyn had downsized and moved into a new one-level condo only a few months ago. She turned 87 Dec. 11, 2020. Lou Ann will be 56 Jan. 28.

Update 23 January 2021: Evelyn passed away from pancreatic cancer this past Tuesday, January 19th under hospice care at home. She had turned 87 on Dec. 11, 2020. She had just been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer less than two months ago and had just moved into a new condo less than a year ago. Evelyn was the last of Pauline (Strauss) Hoyle's immediate family.

George Nelson Lovell of Goodlettsville, TN, age 88, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2016. Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy. Survived by his daughter, Lesa Lovell Foreman (Vance); and granddaughter, Haley Foreman. He served proudly in the US Navy and retired as Captain of the Metro Nashville Fire Department. On September 8, 1933, Clarence and Gertrude Lovell of Nashville, Tennessee welcomed their fourth child, Mary Katherine. She was a quiet, sweet little girl that grew up in Nashville under the watchful eye of her three older brothers, Clarence Jr., George, Ed and one younger brother Arthur (Bud). She was simply ''one of the boys'' who believed herself to be able to accomplish anything her brothers did. Her mother passed away when Mary was just fourteen, after which she became part tomboy and part caring nurturer. The Lovells raised their family in the traditions and faith of the Baptist Church. Mary's spiritual beliefs remained an important priority all her life. She attended North High School and slipped into adulthood as a demure, rather introverted young lady. While she was rarely the first to seek out strangers and attention-getting activities, she was always quick to join into the fun. On the dance floor, however, Mary would emerge as the belle of the ball. She absolutely loved to dance in her flouncy, flared swing tail skirts that sashayed with her favorite steps. Her picture albums are bursting with photos of Mary dancing with her brothers. Unlike Mother, Daughter The petite, brown-eyed brunette certainly managed to capture the attention and the heart of her best suitor, Charles H. Richardson. By 1953, they were married and expecting their proudest moment with the birth of their own daughter, Pamela Ruth. They settled into a peaceful routine with Charles working at the Ford plant while Mary took up a career with the jewellery warehouse Service Merchandise. The family was always Mary's prime focus. She managed the household and was a wonderful cook. Although Pamela was definitely Daddy's Little Girl ? extroverted and always the center of attention ? she holds fond memories of time spent with her Mother. With Charles working shifts, Mary and her daughter would routinely take the city bus downtown on Saturdays for a day of shopping or borrow the car to go to the drive-in to see family-rated movies and new Elvis releases. The family always enjoyed their vacations together and with others; they often organized trips with Charles' sister and family. The two families were so close that their daughter, Elaine, grew up more like a sister than a cousin to Pamela, and much like a second daughter to Mary. An Angel to Watch Over UsWedded harmony, however, proved elusive and their marriage ended in divorce in 1979. Mary continued to work until her retirement from Service Merchandise. She would still enjoy her Saturday night outings to the American Legion Hall where she would spend the entire evening on the dance floor. She also continued to follow her favorite sports team, the Titans, watching every game on the television. During these years, she spent a great deal of time with her daughter and the two strengthened their bonds of kinship and friendship. They were both distraught when Charles passed away in 1991, shortly after retiring from his career at Ford. The world started changing for Mary in the 90s. Behavior changes and erratic comportment were the early warning signs of the dementia that dominated the last twenty years of her life. She moved into Donelson Place and became a long-term member of that community, enjoying social events and Sunday Church service in the company of her daughter. Mary remained the quiet, sweet, kind person she had been all her life. She maintained her sense of humour as she, Pamela and Elaine inadvertently caused security lock-downs on more than one occasion with her tendency to wander off. She was delighted with the never-ending supply of her favorite Oreo cookies and milk that Pamela kept replenished for her until her passing on Christmas Eve, 2012. From today onwards, a new angel will grace our homes every holiday season and throughout the year when we remember the love and joy that Mary shared with us all.

Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in Tucson, Arizona by his parents James Henry Carney II and Erma Lee Carney, who proceeded him in passing. He is survived by his brother James H. Carney III of Minyama, Queensland, Australia and sister Joan P. Barnes of Peoria, Arizona. David never married or had any children.
David grew up in Tucson, Arizona and enlisted in the Army out of high school. He served 3 tours in Vietnam in Supply and as an Armorer, and finished his 7 years active military service as a Staff Sergeant. Afterwards, David primarily drove semi-trucks for 30 years based in Arizona with a 7-year break living in Alaska. David was musically inclined playing the clarinet and piano and loved the outdoors, enjoying hang-gliding, fishing, hunting and spelunking.
Unfortunately, David had suffered from several accidents debilitating his mobility for many years and eventually succumbed to cancer. He was a fighter until the end and will be missed by his family and many friends at Bonita Vista. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2nd at the park hall located at 2175 W. Southern Ave., Apache Junction. His remains will be interned at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, Arizona at a future date.
